Pregnancy Q & A

What do I need to do for prenatal care?

Once you receive the great news, book your first appointment with Dr. Drake so she can give you the lay of the land for the coming months and start your prenatal care. During this all-important first visit, Dr. Drake takes down baseline information about your health and makes recommendations based on your lifestyle and goals.

This first visit also provides you with a great opportunity to ask questions about your role in the pregnancy and how you can best watch out for your health and the health of your unborn child.

From there, Dr. Drake typically recommends a prenatal schedule that follows this timeline:

  • A visit once every month from weeks 4-28
  • Every two weeks for weeks 28-36
  • Weekly after week 36

These visits allow Dr. Drake to monitor your pregnancy, ensuring that your baby is hitting important developmental milestones.

What if I'm a high-risk pregnancy?

Dr. Drake has an extensive background in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. In fact, she routinely handles:

  • High blood pressure conditions, such as preeclampsia
  • Prior surgeries, especially c-sections
  • Twins and higher-order multiples
  • Cervical insufficiency
  • Intrauterine growth restriction
  • Maternal drug use and dependency
  • Maternal medical conditions, including kidney and liver disease
  • Metabolic disorders, including diabetes
  • Abnormal placentation, including placenta previa and accreta

Dr. Drake has worked in emergency settings and she can handle most medical issues that have an impact on your pregnancy.

What delivery options are available?

Dr. Drake is a firm believer in taking a backseat to Mother Nature, who knows best when it comes to delivering a child. Your body is uniquely engineered for childbearing and, more often than not, it’s best to let your body do what it’s designed to do, naturally.

Dr. Drake has obstetric training in many natural childbirth techniques, including:

  • Water-assisted births
  • Hypno-births
  • Bradley Method births

Dr. Drake does provide critical support during your childbirth, monitoring both your health and the health of your baby so she can step in if there’s a problem. Even if there isn’t a problem, you have the peace of mind knowing that an experienced obstetrician is on hand to provide medical expertise and encouragement.
